Privacy Policy

How we collect, use and protect your personal information.

DRAFT: this page is placeholder text awaiting review and sign-off by the Sydney Beach Challenge owner. It is not yet final legal wording.

1. Who we are

Sydney Beach Challenge (“we”, “us”) runs this website. We aim to handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

2. What we collect

  • Account details: your name, email address and password (stored only as a secure hash).
  • Your optional display name and Facebook profile link.
  • Challenge activity: beaches you check in to, dates, notes, ratings, badges and beaches you mark as been to before joining.
  • Photos you choose to upload with a check-in.
  • Basic technical information such as your IP address, used to protect sign-in from abuse.

3. What is shown publicly

Only your display name is shown publicly. If you haven't set one, you appear as “Beachgoer #…”. Your real name and email are never shown to other users. Your check-ins, photos, badges and beach count may appear on the community feed, the leaderboard and your public profile.

You can hide yourself from the leaderboard, feed and public profile at any time in Settings.

4. How we use it

  • To run your account, track your progress and award badges.
  • To show community features such as the feed and leaderboard.
  • To keep the service secure, including limiting repeated sign-in attempts.

We do not sell your personal information.

5. Photos

Please don't upload photos where other people can be identified without their consent, and never upload identifiable images of children without a parent or guardian's consent. We may remove photos that break these rules.

6. Storage and security

Your information is stored with our hosting and cloud storage providers, which may be located outside Australia. We use reasonable safeguards to protect it, but no online service is completely secure.

7. Access, correction and deletion

You can update your display name and visibility in Settings. To request access to, correction of or deletion of your information, contact us using the details on our contact section.

8. Changes

We may update this policy. Significant changes will be shown on this page.
